Read Labels - If you can't read it, think twice! Many of the synthetic skin care ingredients that are used can cause a large list of problems ranging from cancer and alzheimers, to skin allergies, rashes and irritation. Your skin is an important part of your body, and it says a lot about your overall health. Keeping your skin healthy is as easy as reading food labels. Plus, look for fruit, nut and vegetable oils as the main ingredients and watch out for mineral oil or silicone products which are a cheap substitute for the good ingredients that contain all the extra vitamins, emollients and minerals which keep skin looking it's best.
Healthy From the Inside Out - Keep your skin hydrated from the inside by drinking at least 8 cups of pure water each day. Eating foods that are high in vitamins a, c, d & e can help keep your skin healthy too. Foods like blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, papaya, salmon, spinach, broccoli, peas, carrots, tomatoes, almonds, and low-fat milk products are some of the top recommended skin foods.
Towel Dry - Always towel dry after a shower or bath and apply a lotion or cream to seal in all that moisture that just absorbed into your skin from bathing. Air drying can cause your skin to dry out because it encourages evaporation of the water contained within your skin. You want to apply a moisturizer immediately after bathing to seal in all that moisture!
Use Sunscreen
- The top 2 ways your skin can show signs of age is from exposure to
ultraviolet rays and smoking. So, if you are in the sun (even if it's
cloudy the harmful rays still shine through!), make sure to use a
make-up, lip balm, and/or lotion with an SPF of 15 or higher whenever
possible. (PS: We now offer an SPF 30 organic sunscreen, available in
our online store)
Use a
Gentle Cleanser - The skin on your face is different
than the rest of your body, and should be treated with only the most
pure and gentle cleansers. If you have sensitive skin, try to avoid
sulfates, parabens, and other synthetic ingredients as these commonly
cause irritation and allergies. Be aware that most liquid and bar
'soaps' that are available in your local grocery or drug store are
usually detergents, which can be drying and irritating to your skin! Go
for soaps that are made with fruit, nut, and/or vegetable oils and which
are super-fatted with moisturizing butters which contain essential skin
nutrients to help soothe, nourish and prevent dry skin. (PS: We offer
gentle liquid and bar cleansers, available in our online store)
Balance Your Skin's pH - Using a daily pH toner helps to balance the oils and health of your skin. Your skin is naturally a little on the acidic side, and after cleansing your skin can lose some of this acidity. By using a pH toner after cleansing, applying a moisturizer, or taking a bath, it will help to brighten skin, even color, and soften the tone by returning the skin to it's natural pH. This will keep skin looking good for years to come, and can help reduce problems with dry skin and acne too. (We offer skin-type specific pH toners, available in our online store)
Did You Know? Vitamins Help Prevent DNA & Cell Damage |
Vitamin A – Fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamin A including pumpkin, apricots, cantelope, carrots, sweet potatoes, mango & spinich.
Vitamin E - You can find vitamin E in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, olives, spinach, and asparagus. But it's difficult to get a lot from food, so many people use topical creams and moisturizers to supplement.
Vitamin C – E at citrus fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C such as oranges, bell peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, and leafy greens.
Vitamin B Complex - When it comes to skin, the single most important B vitamin is biotin, a nutrient that forms the basis of skin, nail, and hair cells. Without adequate amounts, you may end up with dermatitis (an itchy, scaly skin reaction) or sometimes even hair loss. Even a mild deficiency causes symptoms.
B2 or Thiamin – You’ll find in whole-grain cereals, bread, red meat, egg yolks, green leafy vegetables, legumes, sweet corn, brown rice, berries, and yeast.
B2 or Riboflavin - This is found in whole-grain products, milk, meat, eggs, cheese and peas.
B3 or Niacin – Rich sources are from meats, fish, brewer's yeast, milk, eggs, legumes, potatoes and peanuts.
B6 or Pyridoxine – Get it from brown rice, fish, butter, wheat germ, whole grain cereals, and soybeans
B9 or Folic Acid – Good choices are yeast, liver, green vegetables, and whole grain cereals
B12 – This vitamin is stored in the liver, and can be found in meat, egg yolk, poultry and milk.
Vitamin K. As the nutrient responsible for helping blood clot, Vitamin K won't do much for your skin from the inside. But studies presented to the American Academy of Dermatology in 2003 showed that topical vitamin K works well to reduce circles under the eye. Try our Bella di Terra all natural Eye Potion #9 which contains vitamins A, E, C, D & K to protect and nourish delicate skin.
